Everything started when I received an Epiphyllum cutting which he had taken during one of his trips to Sri Lanka, from Rémy Wuarin, a friend of mine and also a Swiss collector of epiphytic cacti.
I was astonished by the rounded end of the plant stems. This detail proved that the plant wasn't Epiphyllum oxypetalum whose stems have a lanceolate shape.
To my knowledge, Epiphyllum oxypetalum was the only botanic Epiphyllum largely widespread in Asia. The Sri Lankians have the habit to grow one in their garden, in a hollow coconut. They call it “Queen of Night” like quite everywhere in Asia. In Vietnam it's even the object of a legend and a particular worship (link at the end of the page and of the article).
Thus, I thought that it was perhaps a hybrid and I added it to my collection under the name of “unknown Epiphyllum from Sri Lanka”. Would the first blooming enable me to identify it?
I wondered how this Epiphyllum could have been found
in Sri Lanka, all botanic Epiphyllum originating from America.
