Disocactus and Epiphyllum are two genera composed of botanical species.
_____________
The words "Hybrid Epiphyllum" constitute an abuse of language of which one must be aware.
"Epiphyllum" is a genus of botanical epiphytic cacti. "hybrid Epiphyllum" is only consistent for the cross of two or more Epiphyllum. But, it so happens that, in the pedigree of a hybrid Epiphyllum, there are sometimes several genera: Epiphyllum, Disocactus, Selenicereus, Heliocereus, Hylocereus, and sometimes more. It may even be that the pedigree of a hybrid Epiphyllum does not contain any Epiphyllum, which becomes nonsense.
'Frühlingsanfang', for example, has the pedigree Disocactus macranthus x Disocactus nelsonii.
Some authors refer to "Epicactus" instead of "hybrid Epiphyllum". As of today, I've decided to adopt this point of view, giving the word Epicactus the following definition:
Epicactus: any hybrid epiphytic cactus whose pedigree contains only botanical species of the tribe Hylocereeae, as well as crosses of these species.
Schlumbergera and Rhipsalidopsis are not members of the tribe Hylocereeae. Their hybrids are therefore not Epicactus.
N.B.: Due to "computer laziness", the previous pages of my site will remain unchanged.
