EPIPHYLLUM x 'LETTY MAY' variegated

BACK TO THE GALLERY

This hybrid is often infected with a mosaic virus

which gives the flower splendid variegated petals.

The health of the plant is not compromised.

Here is an example from a tulip.

The tulip variety Semper Augustus, which was the most expensive

during the tulipomania episode in the United Provinces in the 17th century,

was in fact affected by a potyvirus,

as were most of the precious varieties of that time.

However, the virus can also fail to express itself,

resulting in flowers of a completely different colour.
