The Tikal site was discovered more than one century ago. Several scientific expeditions were made there during the second half of the 19th century.

The most important excavations were made between 1956 and 1969, with the assistance of the Pennsylvania university. I was lucky to visit the site with a guide who had participated in these excavations.

Many vestiges still remain to be discovered and the forest was only little cleared.
