I had already briefly written on this website about
the summer location of my collection, (see the August 2002 photo gallery,
link at the end of the article) ; at that time, my collection almost entirely
consisted in “terrestrial” cacti, and my specialization in epiphytic
cacti had only just started. At that time I was using my veranda built against
my house to winter my plants.
During the summer period, I used and I am still using a very useful shade
structure which came from a horticulturist who did not have any use of
it any more. It is a solid galvanized metal structure on which I rolled
up rot-resistant ropes which can resist loads of several hundred kilos.
The plants put under this shade structure are in the shadow of trees whose branches I also use to hang pots on to. I always wondered how the device would react in the event of hail. Unfortunately a few years ago we had a huge and heavy hail storm, but the foliage of the trees protected my plants which were only slightly pricked. I didn’t have any serious damages, but I decided for the following years to cover the shade structure with plastic shade cloths. I gave up this system two years later because the plastic shade cloths did not allow a regular flow of rain on my plants. Thus I went back to the previous solution while hoping not to have to go through an other devastating hail storm…
