I spoke about my Hatiora to several friends and one among them, Pythagore Vassiloglou, sent me two photographs of Epiphyllum looking like Epiphyllum x 'Deutsche Kaiserin' and which spectacularly showed a similar phenomenon. I sent the photographs to Eckhard Meier who confirmed that it was the same phenomenon.
The bud on the left on the first photograph makes it possible to say that this plant is close to Epiphyllum x 'Deutsche Kaiserin' or of its botanical relative Disocactus phyllanthoides.
The two photographs show a stem of abnormal shape, vaguely recalling the corrugated cylindrical shape of the floral tube, stem resulting from a floral bud which evolved into vegetative bud. This stem of still abnormal form is covered with the “petals” of what could have been a bloom.
The plant which had enough energy “decided” at the last moment to form a new stem instead of blooming.
