(update: February 2013: photos taken from 2006 to 2012)
For me, Rhipsalis identification has always been a delicate matter, all the more so since some Rhipsalis may be sold, more often than not, under wrong names. Moreover, one Rhipsalis often has several synonymous names, sometimes considered by some people as names of varieties or forms close to the same species.
For instance, on the French grower Henri Kuentz's website , we are told about no less than 26 synonymous names of Lepismium cruciform, often classified in Rhipsalis ; in a word, it's easy to get confused ! And this case of a high number of synonymous names isn't an exception concerning Lepismium and Rhipsalis. On my website, I chose to write the three names under which I bought this plant in different places : Lepismium cruciforme, Lepismium cavernosum and Rhipsalis radicans. In the past I thought I had three different species !
I tried to eliminate as many errors as possible and to correct them, then to write this page by adopting a satisfying classification in my opinion. For these two points, I used the reference website "rhipsalis.com" (link on my page : "debated history of Rhipsalis"), and I adopted the Rhipsalis classification of the excellent monograph written by W. Barthlott and N.P. Taylor, published in 1995 in number 13 issue of the review : Bradleya.
When I wrote the update of 2013, many taxonomic changes had been made, compared to the page of 2006. I took it into account while using first the names adopted by the “New Lexicon Cactus”, a collective book compiled and published in 2006 by David Hunt. I however very often kept track of the old names, not to disrupt too much some readers’ habits.
However I think that some errors still remain concerning my identifications and I would be grateful to any competent person to help me to rectify them without hesitation.
