In 1994 I bought a Nopalxochia horichii cutting from Rainbow Gardens and then, in 1998 a Disocactus kimnachii cutting from a British producer. These two species are said to be synonyms. Around 2003 I obtained very different flowers on the two plants; the pink color of the first one lets me think that it’s the only one identified properly. The second one has a red color which doesn’t correspond to the color of the flower of this species (see the two photographs below).

Nopalxochia horichii ........................................................................... Disocactus kimnachii (?)
The plant with red flower puzzled me by giving little monstrous flowerings. It was the case during spring 2007 in particular and I kept an eye on a flower from the unopened bud to the fully opened flower, one day before it faded. As a curiosity, it’s this evolution that is the subject of the pictures below.
Evolution of a Disocactus kimnachii (?) flower
Several weeks have gone by between the first photograph and the last, which oddly enough reveals a color of flower different from the previous ones.
I obtained this same monstrous flowering phenomenon with Aporophyllum X “Helena” and I wonder whether the causes are not identical. I will reconsider this much puzzling topic in a forthcoming update.
